The underpass where the child was allegedly hit by an adult cyclist
By Lucy Frost
A child was left hospitalised after he was reportedly hit by an adult cyclist travelling underneath the bridge on Station Road.
The parent, who posted anonymously on the Filton News and Views Facebook page, said: “Just to make people aware of adults riding fast underneath the bridge on station road going towards McDonald’s. While the children are coming to and from school please be mindful and dismantle your bikes like the sign reads. My son ended up in hospital yesterday being hit off bike by an adult speeding through and didn’t even stop to check on him.
“Luckily he’s home and recovering. Please let your children know to be very careful walking under there as it is still a constant accident waiting to happen.”

The narrow lane has signage to indicate that pedestrians have priority over cyclists, however witnesses reported that the cyclist was travelling at speed and failed to stop after the incident occurred. Multiple residents commented on the post, sharing similar unpleasant experiences on the same path. Others called for the council to reconsider the effectiveness of the signage, claiming the current sign could be easily missed.
Simon Davies, Filton town clerk, said: “I would advise anyone with concerns to contact South Gloucestershire Council via their portal or our local South Gloucestershire Councillors directly.”
South Glos councillor, Adam Monk, said: “What needs to be considered on the issue of cyclists passing under the bridge is that this is on the route to the cycle paths, there are ‘Pedestrians Have Priority Signs’ on both sides. If residents are concerned, we would encourage them to contact us, we are available every Saturday in Filton Library from 10am to 11am alternatively we can be contacted by email alex.doyle@southglos.gov.uk or adam.monk@southglos.gov.uk.
“We are open to support a petition and present this to South Glos Council.”
