Shrub bank becomes a haven for local wildlife

Filton Community Garden was a hive of activity last month as volunteers came together to plant an exciting new feature designed to support local wildlife.

The wildlife shrub bank will offer food, shelter, and nesting sites for a wide variety of birds, insects, and small mammals — helping transform the community garden into a true wildlife haven.

Plants included honeysuckle, winter jasmine, blackthorn hedges, Japanese barberry, and Cotoneaster, which when all established will put on a lovely display through the seasons.

From digging and planting to watering and weeding, every pair of hands made a difference.

A spokesperson from the group said: “Projects like this are only possible thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers.”

For those who missed the session, there will be plenty more opportunities coming up to help care for and develop the Filton Community Garden — whether a seasoned gardener or just needing to get some fresh air and meet friendly faces.

Filton’s summer fete is happening on Sunday, July 13 July, 12pm – 4pm at Filton Community Garden.

What is set to be a fantastic day out for the whole family, there will be a plant stall, raffle, games, cake and refreshments  — and all proceeds go straight back into the garden for projects just like the wildlife shrub bank.

Organisers are looking for volunteers to help with the fair — whether that’s setting up, running a stall, asking for raffle prizes, baking cakes, donating plants, or packing down at the end of the day.

If you can lend a hand, even just for an hour or two, get in touch via the Facebook page, or email communitygarden@filtontowncouncil.gov.uk
